ACL Surgery

ACL Surgery

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) surgery is a procedure used to reconstruct or repair a torn ACL — one of the major ligaments in the knee that helps stabilize the joint. ACL injuries are common among athletes and active individuals and often result from sudden stops, twists, or impacts during sports activities. ACL reconstruction usually involves replacing the torn ligament with a tendon graft, which may be taken from the patient's own body (autograft) or from a donor (allograft). The procedure is typically performed arthroscopically, making it minimally invasive with quicker recovery and fewer complications. Candidates for ACL surgery typically experience knee instability, swelling, pain, and a “giving way” sensation. When left untreated, a torn ACL can lead to further joint damage and limit daily activities. Recovery after ACL surgery includes a progressive rehabilitation program to restore strength, flexibility, and range of motion. Physical therapy is critical and may last for several months. Most patients can return to sports and physical activities within 6–12 months, depending on healing and adherence to rehab. With advanced surgical techniques and proper rehabilitation, ACL surgery has a high success rate and can restore full function to the knee.
