LCL Surgery

LCL Surgery

Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) surgery is a procedure to repair or reconstruct the LCL, a key ligament on the outer side of the knee that provides stability during side-to-side movements. LCL injuries typically occur due to direct force to the inside of the knee, often during sports or accidents. In cases where the LCL is severely torn or stretched and doesn't heal with conservative treatments like rest or physical therapy, surgical intervention is required. During LCL reconstruction, the damaged ligament is replaced using a graft, which may come from the patient's own tissue or a donor. LCL injuries can cause knee instability, swelling, pain on the outer knee, and difficulty in lateral movement. If left untreated, they may lead to chronic instability and further joint damage. Post-surgery, a structured rehabilitation plan is essential to regain strength, flexibility, and stability. Physical therapy typically begins shortly after surgery and continues for several months. Most patients return to normal activity within 4–6 months. With proper care, LCL surgery is highly successful in restoring knee function and enabling patients to resume an active lifestyle without pain or instability.
